You need to have Java installed if you want to use the validation feature, i.e. if you want the editor to verify the correctness of the markup you produce.

What about XMetaL XMAX? I deployed it in may last company in 2008 to edit DITA in IE (it needs active x). With SharePoint as SS-CMS the users needed onle the link to the repository.
